Michael Stearns, born 1948, is definitely one of my favorite artists in this genre of music.
He's been playing and making music since his teen years, and he produced his first album ("Desert Moon Walk") in 1977.
He has a very interesting and somewhat surprising background which I would encourage you to read about.

Actually, you're quite accurate.

Michael Stearns has created musical scores for some very well renown documentary films, particularly the ones for IMAX theaters.

And I guess that says something about this music... It can really portray its intended mood very effectively.

well, this was interesting... sounds like the sountrack to a discovery channel special. ( the good ones) like when your watching some large beast stalk its prey, waiting for it to strike (i am so random haha, i should be locked up)
