Enough of this crap..This Taepu is getting me sick. Look people this guy ( Eni F)have been in congress for so long .Heck he barely know how to speak Samoa..I grown up in Samoa Now I'm here in the States and realized how much of an in affective this guy is.. He is such a Barack Obama fan he is so partisan .. He no longer speak for the people of Samoa now he is standing up for Asians.. LOOK dude WHAT WE need as Samoan is JOBS Raising the minimum wage by u and DEMocraps cost us Samoa Packing
CONT: Why is it that these people not have a space or a platform from which to be proud of their unique cultures and to express it - this is not a divisive tactic on our parts. This is a way for us to perpetuate the idea of cultural acceptance and tolerance here in America (which I am sorry to say has not been fully achieved). We share our cultures, traditions and customs with those interested in learning about who we are, what we are about, and why we do what we do.
CONT: As cliche as this sounds, America is in fact a melting pot of many peoples and many cultures - these people should be allowed and proud of what they have contributed to this country whether it be in the armed services or something as little as contributing words to the English language (i.e. the word Tattoo derives from the Samoan word tatau).
CONT: Through watching this video, I do not think that Rep. Faleomavaega is requesting for the month of May to be designated as an API Heritage Month - he is merely recognizing the contributions of Asian and Pacific Islander peoples who have given valiantly for the United States. And I ask you respectfully to explain exactly what an American is to in your words. In my humble opinion, America (and being American) is but a great concept that does not necessarily involve blood lines.
In response to Whoo69's, I must first say fa'afetai tele (THANKS) for your comments. I know that you are well-intentioned, but I must respectfully speak on this issue, especially being someone of Samoan descent who was born in America. I cannot speak for other "territories", but American Samoa depends heavily on grants provided by the United States. And the majority of Samoans are grateful and appreciative for this. And May, officially or unofficially, is Asian Pacific Islander Heritage month.
I'm sick of the U.S. with empire and hegemony. Why hasn't the democratic majority talked about that for a change? Why don't they question the absurdity of having Puerto Rico or Guam vote in our primaries for our presidential candidates?? If Puerto Rico and Guam wanna become U.S. states, fine, let them vote on it. But if they wanna stay independent, let them do that. But none of this territory crap where they're independent but also part of the U.S.
And if Samoa can't govern itself, let's end this territory nonsense and do what we can to make Samoa self-sufficient and its own independent nation, along with Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. I mean, WTF are we, the so-called "bastion of freedom", the US, doing with territories?? We're not a colonial power! Let them have self-determination. Hell, reps. from places like Samoa don't even get a vote in the House. What's the point of letting them in then?
American Samoa?? Why doesn't he just go back to Samoa and worry about things over there or ask the gov't in Samoa to make May this heritage month thingy?? Besides, since when is it Congress's job to declare a month as "such-and-such heritage month"? It's dumb. I'm sick of this identity politics crap the Democrats keep giving us. It shouldn't matter what race you are. If you're American, you're American, period. No black history month, white history month, hispanic, asian, or latino month.
