In my experience, cleaning the neck of a skimmer decreases performance. It negates the so called "Break-in period"

Cleaning the neck is what you should do periodically to keep the skimmer performing correctly but cleaning correctly is important. This is a water clean, same as if you wiped the neck with a paper towel which you should do often.

Yes, when the cleaner runs the neck junk end up on the top of the foam which gets ejected into the collection cup. Running once per day doesn't result in much gunk (as you would have cleaning weekly). Skimmer output, I've found is about 30% better.

The cleaner is from the same mfg of the skimmer; unless the skimmer dimentions are the same I'd guess that it would not work for another brand.

The cleaner turns on for 15 seconds, each day and has made tank maintenance very nice!

@AQUARIUMHOBBY it falls into skimmer attaches it self to fine air bubbles

then comes up the neck then over it. plus doing that it helps the skimmer bubble

foam up more where as some times skimmers lose foam for a bit

@sharpiesreef if you look at aqua medics twin 5000 skimmer instructions

it teels you to clean the neck once a year as i got that skimmer and plus sharpiesreef i have never cleaned mine and it works well. plus when i cleaned

it once lost foam and it did not produced good foam till 2 weeks started working ok again
