"It's Always Orange Day in California" - Peerless Quartet (1916)

IT'S ALWAYS ORANGE DAY IN CALIFORNIA

This song, promoting California and its legendary "golden" climate, is from a musical play, "Canary Cottage," the first New York performance of which was at the opening of the Morosco Theater in February, 1917. (A review from the New York Times can be found on the internet.) The "Orange Day" song was the play's grand finale, set in an orange grove, with the performers tossing paper oranges to the audience. This recording was made in June, 1916. Below are the lyrics:

You had your golden poppies when Cabrillo came in 1542!

You had your golden mountains back in 1849!
And you've still a golden plume,
For you wear a golden bloom
Of orange blossoms all the time!

It's always Orange Day in California!

The golden sun is here to warm you!
For every golden fruit, there's a golden heart, to boot!
Become a booster!

The golden climate out this way . . . far out this way!
So, hop a train, Gol-darn ya'!,
