The Portuguese Guitarra is part of the cittern family which are fretted instruments with teardrop shaped bodies, flat backs (as opposed to the lute bowl shape) and courses of double strings. Pedro Caldeira Cabral in his 400 page book, A Guitarra Portuguesa, argues that the modern guitarra evolved in Portugal from a Renaissance "citara" (Cittern or cithern in English). In the 18th Century the importation of the English Guittar influenced the design of the Portuguese guitarra.
