i live right near this interchange...one time we snuck out on to the abandoned pavement. always wondered where the highways were supposed to go to, but didnt find out out til recently. another example of piss-poor planning on CT's part lol
The unused bridges were part of the 291 Beltway that was to go around hartford as far north as Windsor and south to Farmington west to West Hartford and East over to Manchester and East Hartford...the funds ran dry and the project came to a hault...GOV Roland saw to it though that Route 9 and 84 would connect here relieving the traffic from the roads for the Mall and College commuters
To add to that comment, I used to go under it every year from 1999-2005 on the way to Winter Games for Special Olympics. The Farmington Star was a nickname I gave it when I first saw it on a trip to Waterbury in 1993. I think I even have a pic of it somewhere. There was another year I tried to take a pic but it was snowing. Leave it up to buaracracy to make sure the best looking interchange in CT is not used to full potential.
Ah yes, the good ol 'Farmington Star' as I called it. I wonder if they do eventually plan on using the 'empty' bridge on the bottom, which is why it looks kept up.
I been to here. My bus drives under it daily. My uncle and I checked it out at night. Funny thing is that they have street lights in use on the abounded highway. There is a old dirt access road from the closed neighbor hood to it. Google Earth it. You can get to it over a fence. Also it apparently is is in good shape, almost like they have been keeping it up. It depends in the woods on either side.
By the way the reason they did not end the abandoned freeway at "that road" (Middle RD/Tunxis) is because it would likely overwhelm the road with traffic...although it would certainly be nice to havthe a Middle RD exit for the monastary and Uconn Health Center, it dosen't make much sense beyond that. Also, ramps only just begin to merge with the mainline at the Middle RD terminus. An exit could easily be put there though. What would be better is a RT 4(Farmington Ave) exit...
Possibly the coolest thing in connecticut. I live a mile away from it. I was searching youtube for the possibility of someone having uploaded their video of the Route 9/I-291 I-84 stack interchange when I found this. It is a creepy place. Abandoned ramps, mainline, rampant evidence of tagging, overgrown segments, an AWESOME view from the 4th level, etc
I do know as well exactly where that is on I-84. I was on that a few weeks ago going to my cousin's house in West Hartford. Ironically I was looking at the interchange on Google Earth yesterday. The two lower overpasses were actually never used because they didn't build Route 9 beyond I-84. The road actually just comes to an abrupt end at some brush with a road just yards away. I don't know why they just didn't actually end that highway right at that road beyond the brush.

That is the only traditional 4-Level stack in New England, I always enjoy going through it.
