I live in Greenpoint and often cross the Newtown Creek using the Pulaski Bridge, which links Long Island City with Brooklyn. The Creek has an foul oiliness that you can sense even high above it on the bridge. I'm 56 and probably won't be around in 50 years. I hope a cleaned-up Newtown Creek is.
I used to lived in Elmhurst, Queens, an area once called Newtown. The link by name with the rancid Creek led Newtown to change its name to Elmhurst -- in 1898.
Fascinating video.
