it's common sense to tell if yours can be illegal or blinding. don't drive suvs with hids, it's bad enough for low cars, like myself. when most suvs hid drivers have their hid lights aimed further, and blind the hell out of me from behind. and to look at on coming traffic, we all have to know environment. and lights are the first thing we notice. don't be an idiot "fiftyfourj"
my hid kit has a metal cover that acts as a cutoff line....not a single driver has flashed me in the past 2 years, and im on the road nearly every night...u cant dazzled by range rovers and other suv's because of their ride height, but who asked you to look directly into the headlights of oncoming traffic?
In the UK you cant put HIDs in regular halogen headlamps. You have to replace the entire headlamp fittings for ones that are specifically designed for HID lamps & are self levelling. Also a headlamp washing system must be fitted. Hella do produce these components but it will be costly & complicated to fit. For any modification of this type you will probably want to get the ok in writing from the Vehicle Standards Agency
@bendix109 HID retrofit kits are illegal but factory installed HID lights are not. Its simple as that. Google the DOT statement on HID retrofitted cars.
"The only acceptable way of converting is to replace the headlamp unit with one approved for gas discharge bulbs. Such headlamps will be approved to UNECE Regulation 98 and 'E' marked. If headlamps approved to UNECE Regulation 98 are retro-fitted, they must be self levelling (as part of headlamp sysytem, or via self-levelling suspension), and headlamp washers must be installed. Under the Road Traffic Act 1998, it is an offence to fit or use parts which are not legal"
It's just illegal to put those in halogen headlights in the U.S. It not S.A.E or DOT approved and the cops will blame you for causing an accident. (like they did to me.) The only way is to way is to get aftermarket projector headlights with an HID bulb in it. ( for motorcycles you can use the kit on a 10' Yamaha R1
