It may not be the all time fastest but the VW Beetle has countless uses for its basic platform and drivetrain! Rebuilt as a buggy is among the most popular conversions! And yes, with careful modifications, you can even prep it to sail the ocean like a boat - and float indefinitely! Look closely at the specially-built exhaust pipes in this video.

I see by this commercial that even in Peru, Beetles got "customized" with hippie flower designs. This must've been fairly common, for it to appear in a commercial.

The Mexican Beeltes weren't made from German parts.. they were indigenous Mexican. (Indeed the cheapest pattern Beetle parts in Europe for the last 20 years have been 'Hecho en Mexico'.)
