her summary:
I used the song by Emilie Autumn remixed by ASP. (In the credits I used the song 'Psychosis' by Poets of the Fall.) I always wanted to use it for a Bats/J mv because it depicts their dark, complex relationship. I used clips from the game previews for Arkham Asylum which is supposed to be a spin-off of the graphic novel by the same title which is also one of my favorites. I was moved by the psychotic, grungy imagery of the game which, until now, had been original only to some of the comics/graphic novels.
The novel Arkham Asylum is a stunning portrayal of what really goes on in the minds of Gothams two greatest polarities. Taking place inside the gothic asylum itself, it paints a picture of Batmans true insanity and the possibility that all his greatest foes are no more than a fragment of his own shattered subconscious. And the possibility that Batman and Joker have a lot more in common than what can initially be recognized! What was a struggle to save Gotham is really only a struggle to preserve Bruce Waynes sanity.
The music video is about Jokers obsession with Batman and Batmans constant, persistent struggle to help Joker overcome his personal demons. Due to the limited amount of clips I was forced to use a shorter version of the song and to wrap the project up with a lot of difficulty. But I think I achieved something at the end by shedding light on a certain element of Bats and Js relationship that I find particularly appealing, that is, Batmans willingness to be there for Joker, to *help* him so that he doesnt have to be alone anymore, dancing over the edge of his shattered, fragmented mind.
At 1:11, I used a clip of Batman flying into some sort of cave during the lyrics 'Id give up all my wealth to buy you back the soul you never sold.' Anyone well versed in Greek lore might notice the allusion to the legends of Hades and the Underworld, and the story of Orpheus and Eurydice.
The story of Orpheus and Eurydice is about a man, Orpheus, who goes underground, crosses the river Styx and seeks out the god, Hades and asks him to give him back his wife, Eurydice. Hades agrees only on the condition that Orpheus leave and never look back to see if his wife is there. Orpheus agrees and begins to make his ascent back to the overworld. But just as he is about to leave the cave, Orpheus is convinced that Hades tricked him and that his wife is not behind him at all. So he turns around, sees her there and realizes the enormity of his mistake.
The symbolism is reminiscent of a scene in my other favorite graphic novel The Killing Joke where Joker alludes to Batman that he would hold a light out for him (to rehabilitate his mind) and that he would cross over it, yet half way through Batman would turn out the light and Joker would fall back into the void of his delusional sense of reality.
