The tradition at Notre Dame is, before the 4th quarter begins, the band plays the finale of the 1812 Overture while the fans wave their arms and shape their fingers into the letter of the current coach's last name (in this case, 'W' for Weis). Then, Sgt. Tim McCarthy of the Indiana State Police reads a driving safety announcement that ends in a pun. He's been doing this since 1961.
Charlie Weis is the football coach for the Irish; Officer McCarthy likes the puns, so not to sound too much of a hard ass, he throws in a pun after the safety announcement.
that was the first notre dame game i've been too.
