Episode 20 - Watermelon

On this episode learn how to choose, what might be the most difficult fruit to pick right, the watermelon.

The watermelon is approximately 92 percent water and for this reason it's important to choose watermelons that are heavy for their size, very heavy!

Watermelons possess many clues that you can feel, hear, and see which tell you whether or not they are ripe. Most important of these are a watermelon's shape, weight, and the sound it makes when tapped.

In order to perform the "thump" test (the test that allows you to hear if a melon is ripe) you must follow a few basic steps. First you want to make sure you are holding the melon away from your body. Next use an open hand to tap the watermelon as you would a bongo drum. Finally listen for a sound that is similar to a bongo drum except with a slightly deeper sound.

This technique is a skill as well as an art and the more times you perform it, the better you'll get at picking ripe watermelons.

All of these tips, tricks, and techniques require practice. Try to find as many of these tips as possible in each watermelon you choose but don't feel the need to find them all in each and every melon. The more clues you can find to a watermelon's ripeness the better your chance of getting that perfect melon will be. Get out there and practice but most of all enjoy!

  • TY so much! Florida summers make melons necessary for hydration, we are LOVING them right about now! Haha! I was one who thumped w/out knowing WHY...NOW I DO!

  • @Tiagem78 haha. Very cool. So glad I could help and now if someone asks you what you're doing tapping that melon...you can tell them all the fun details;) Thanks for watching.

  • When you were tapping on that melon I thought from its sound it was not a really ripe one,and then you cut it open and it wasn't, really ripe sweet ones are a deeper red,you don't need to pick them up when you tap them either,I use my knuckles because you get a much deeper, truer sound when you rap them, as long as their on top of the pile and don't have any melons sitting on them, I've been picking them right for 30 years and rarely miss.Video was ok,but I wish people have to clown so much.

  • @8thinpigs This episode was mic'd different so the sound you heard was prob. not accurate. Youll notice that at the end we smash the melon into our faces & we both agreed it was one of the better tasting melons we've had.

Also whats nice about picking up the melon, which I should of said in the episode, is that if you feel the melon vibrate in your other hand, that is also a good sign of ripeness.

Thanks for your comments. And we try to be funny because we can & so we dont get bored;)

  • yeah in Asia we also tap the watermelon to get that succulent sound before we pay for it. i prefer the yellow rather than red watermelon. did you ever try a yellow one btw, ray?

  • Also if it vibrates in your hand when you tap is a good test that I didn't mention;)

Yes I've had the yellow and orange as well. Very good stuff. Thanks for watching!

  • @8thinpigs Could you make a vid showing your methods. Thanks

  • oh i learned something new today, thanks for the tips. orange watermelon? i guess it's the one that has a more saturated color than yellow. people said the flesh of an oval watermelon (maybe another species) is more crunchier. rectangle watermelon also very popular in the Japan i guess. what about in the US?

  • thanks for sharing you're cute
