I took the Half-Life VR mod that I've been working on that adds full head (and weapon) tracking to the source engine and dropped it into the Black Mesa source mod. Given that I hacked the two mods together some sections didn't load properly, I think the result is still good enough to get a feel for how much of an impact adding accurate head tracking and an HMD like the Oculus Rift can be.

This also highlights something that Palmer Luckey, the creator of the Rift has said about how current games often counter the lack of immersion with combat and skill tests. While those are still great mechanics, in this playthrough I had no weapons and the only enemies were occasional headcrabs and barnacles (the rest would require a proper integration of the two mods to load correctly), but it was still one of the most tense, engaging experiences I've had in gaming.

Everything in this video was played sitting on my couch with an xbox 360 controller. While not as immersive as standing up with the weapon controller it's still worlds more immersive than playing at a PC or on a TV.

The music in the video is from the soundtrack of the mod by Joel Nielsen that's freely available at http://www.blackmesasource.com/soundt...
