Bring Me Home for Christmas {3}

When I finally make it home, my parents were sitting at the couch, watching a Christmas movie with my little sister, Madison. The Christmas lights on the tree were on, sparkling in different bright colors.
"Hey, honey," my dad says. "Where have you been?"
"Shopping for some gifts. I'm gonna go wrap them now," I say before running up the stairs. I couldnt help but think about what Joe was missing-- a family at home, the Christmas spirit, etc. I walk pass my parent's room and Dallas's room before making it into mine. Dallas would be coming home for Christmas in a few days-- in the meantime, she was away at college right now. I shut the door behind me and jumped onto my bed, letting out a sigh. Joe must have a tough life but at least he wasn't alone. He had Hailey.
I sit up and hear my phone start to ring.
"Hey bitch," my best friend, Selena, says as soon as I answer. I laugh. "What do you want for Christmas?" she asks.
"Are you seriously asking me this?" I laugh.
"YES. Now answer me," she demands.
"I don't really know.. you dont really have to get me anything, Sel," I tell her.
"Nuh-uh. You're my best friend, of course I'm gonna get you something," she says.
"Then surprise me."
"Fine. You're no help. I'll talk to you later," she says before hanging up.
I put my phone down and then look over at the jar of money on my drawer. Ever since the beginning of senior year, me, Selena, and our other friend Miley have been saving up money to go to Paris after we graduate. Of course the tickets were expensive but we were determined. I just needed a couple of hundred more dollars till I reach my goal. I was excited. Going to Paris had been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. Before I knew it, I was drifting off to sleep just thinking of a lot of stuff-- from Paris to graduation to Joe and Hailey. Lets just say that meeting Joe and Hailey tonight was an easy way to bring a smile to my face.

The next night, after pulling on my coat and scarf, I was out the door. The snow was light, drifting to the ground. I walked the familiar path to Joe's apartment and I climb up the 5 flights of stairs. When I got to the right floor, I was panting and trying to catch my breath. I knock on the door-- because there was no doorbell-- and Joe opens it. He was wearing a worn out shirt and the same jeans from yesterday. Once he sees me, he smiles.
"Hey," he says, stepping aside so I could walk in. "I just have to get Hailey dressed and then we can leave. You can grab some water from the kitchen."
I nod and go into the kitchen to get some cold water. Then, I walk into what looked like Joe and Hailey's room and he was putting on her beanie. His room looked empty as well. Just a bed and a crib and a table. There was also a closet which was only half-full. I wave at her and she giggles, reaching out for me.
"You can hold her if you want," Joe offers.
I reach down and pick her up, putting her on my hip. She holds onto me tightly and I smile at her. Joe pulls on the same backpack from yesterday.
"Lets get going," he says over his shoulder as he walks out of the room.
We walk down the stairs and Hailey didnt want to go to Joe and instead, wanted me to keep carrying her. We walk through the busy streets, passing people. I walked beside Joe and he just looked straight ahead. We ended up at the park, just roaming around. I check the time and see that its 10pm. I didn't have to be home until another 2 hours, which was good because I dont know when the next time I'll be able to see Joe and Hailey.
We sat down on a bench and Joe takes Hailey from me, putting her on his lap and hugging her tight to his chest. Hailey giggles. We talk for a while and it just felt comforting to me to be here with Joe. He was so sweet and generous and he listened while I talked. He didnt tell me much about himself so I did most of the talking. It was okay because I had a feeling that he had a tough past. When he's ready to tell me, I'll listen; but for now, I wasnt going to force him. One thing I knew for sure was that I really liked Joe. I've only met a few people who were actually real-- not afraid to be themself. Thats what I liked about Joe. He was so open and willing to listen to me. And the way he is with Hailey.. made me like him even more. He's a teenage dad and I could see that he loves having Hailey in his life.
An hour later, we both get up and Hailey is asleep on Joe's shoulder. We walk the streets in silence and once we got to Joe's building, he stops and turns to me.
"I had a great time," I tell him, smiling.
"Yeah, me too. I think Hailey did as well."
"You should probably get her into bed."
He nods but stares right into my eyes. "So.. do you want to do this again tomorrow night?"
"I'd love to."
He smiles and leans down to kiss my cheek. "Thanks for tonight. Goodnight."
With that, he turns to walk up the long flight of stairs. I let out a breath and turn to start walking home.
