Video compilation of Rio Fire Wildfire. In 1995, a "perfect storm" set of conditions started by a lightening strike the fire raged for a few weeks, burning 23,000 in North Scottsdale. Not a single home was lost, partly luck but greatly because the Rural/Metro Fire Teams kicked ass! I was the tactical dispatcher on duty at the time and it was one of the most harrowing experiences of my 15 year career when the fire almost overran the initial engine and brush teams. Rural/Metro created this shameless self promotion video (converted from VHS)
15 years later you can still see the effects of the fire. The large trees are missing. Otherwise the desert has grown back. The McDowells seem unaffected starting at the trailhead on 128th. It's a beautiful hike.
