James Lentz, President and COO of Toyota Motor Sales, predicts "we will probably see peak oil sometime around the end of the next decade." Foreseeing a steady rise in the cost of gasoline, Lentz advocates for the continued development of alternatives to oil such as battery power and fuel cells.

-----

Though the auto industry seemed on the brink of collapse, the recent Cash for Clunkers program arguably helped to jump-start the car economy and get wheels moving again. But what does this really mean for cars and drivers today?

During the recession, will the demand for smarter, cleaner models continue, or will people choose to skimp on driving altogether? Industry veteran James Lentz will discuss the future of cars in America. - Commonwealth Club of California

  • Wow, Toyota is very optimistic.... with peak oil, economies will not grow and toyota may not exist...

  • The really high gas prices related to Peak Oil i believe will hit us much faster than 2020! We will experience the big energy crunch between now and more like 2013.The industrial economy is over...let's say everyone get's an electric car, Ok, so what are all the planes and ships going to run on? The entire industrial infrastructure is OIL! Btw, Mexico is getting to a point now that they can no longer export large amounts of oil to the US!

  • I suppose they have never heard of the ,Tar Sands,Bakken field, and 400 year supply of natural gas...All these things will guarantee, internal combustion for at least the next 80 years... AND SUPPLIED ALL FROM NORTH AMERICA...

  • Thanks for the information you provided...like your video..please do more..thanks,

  • well the goverment in Quebec Canada is promoting Electric vehicule

  • Goodness. 'Peak oil' is a construct? Regardless of political or any other identification - this is as naive as could be. Please educate yourself further - not only from the most limited of approaches. And the 'issue' is not only one of Peak oil but other declining resources as well. Do you realize how vulnerable virtually all food supplies are at this point? How about the destruction to the latter via recent weather-related incidents? This CEO 'perspective' is laughable if lamentable.

  • @vince33x First, I am not against oil, I think we owe our lifestyle to oil. You have to remember that we are replacing super giant land based oil fields with smaller oil fields under thousands of feet of water and thousands more of rock, some multiple miles. We are replacing oil fields with 50:1 EROEI with 10:1 eroei with some as low as 3:1. Many of these new projects are only feasible with oil prices over $80-$100/bl. We are using oil at over 4x the rate we are finding new fields.

  • @christo930 Ur words: "Even the IEA says the era of cheap oil is over" I've bn hearing that phrase now 4 4 decades. It's nonsensical. In 1980, Americans spent 8% of their avg. yearly income on oil - today it's 3% - so in those terms it's "cheaper relative to avg. incomes." Also, to generate a KWH of energy, oil & coal r 95% cheaper than: Wind & Solar. The era of "cheap oil is over" Really? Compared to what?

  • @vince33x 2 massive oil field discoveries are going to replace existing production losses? You just don't get the scale of the problem. Look at cantarell and the north sea, two giant fields that are well into depletion and have to be replaced before any production can be added. You have to run faster and faster just to stay in place. Even the IEA says the era of cheap oil is over.

  • @vince33x I thought you denounce people who call you names? So, what do you do, call others names. You're so full of crap you have to clean your ears with toilet paper. Get a life you biggoted moron.

  • @KrunchyJD BTW, this guy Lentz is both a crybaby & an idiot.
