A rainy Friday night means some OFF-THE-WALL tunes, enjoy my friends! Pookie and the Imperials with Sammy Strain doing the high work. Pookie had left the Spaniels during this period and Billy Taylor of the Castelles was brought in to do the lead of the group to rave reviews. When Pookie came back several years later he so liked Billy Taylor's voice that he kept Billy in the Spaniels!

  • Great song from 1963, a great year for music. A year later and you might never have heard this song on the radio. One of Pookie's best efforts. I remember my brother and I used to say they were using a leaky toilet to get that watery sound. Who knows? In any event, thanks for posting this classic.

  • @speedy45rpm Never thought of a leaky toilet, but you know, it's got me wondering? I was a radio freak back in 63 and never heard this played. Actually never heard it until I found the record, I guess we owe it all to our DJs who played the same old xxxx.

  • The interesting thing is that Pookie came to N.Y. to record this and Lloyd Price forget to make arrangements so Pookie had to sleep on a park bench most of the week.Great tune.

  • @beefoneeto Hmm, very interesting, thanks!!!

  • LOVE IT!!!

  • @harptone55 Ahh sure is pretty, thank you my friend!

  • Double L Records, a Lloyd Price venture

  • HI RICHARD,TERRIFIC TRACK HERE! THANK YOU FOR THE MEMORIES AND THE FUN,TOM D.BRICK,NJ. {AT THE SHORE}.

  • One of my favorites, as was another Double L record, "OH, What a Night for Love" by Ronnie Tyson

  • This is just a beautiful song.

  • Pookie Hudson and The Imperials.Great combo.

  • That water sound is JUST like what's heard on "Because of You" by Rome and Paris. I think it's from around the same time.

  • Oh man,I love this record!! Pookie sought of sounds like his friend SAM COOKE on this song. P.I.P POOKIE!

  • @dowopper51 Yes, the DJs still had power over the playlists back then, which was a much better arrangement than the rigid formulas that began creeping in in the late 60s and eventually took over all but a few battling independents who actually care about the music. This song was quite common on the black stations in Philly, but would also be heard on the mainstream rock stations as well. Thanks so much for your great posts -- I noticed you had The Headliners on there, another Philly favorite.
