Austin plays to another backing track for the '09 contest. Unfortunately, he didn't place.

The audio is out of sync because this was rendering using WMM on a netbook. This may be fixed in the future, but you probably shouldn't count on that.

Austin was using an Epiphone Goth G-400, with one volume pot and one bridge humbucker, into a tweedy Fender. It might have been a Hot Rod DeVille or something. The pickup is a tappable Alumitone at full power.

  • By the way, I need to thank you for posting this clip because I've been wondering about the Lace Deathbucker pickups. I'm going to check 'em out now, thanks to you! You've got great tone...even on YouTube!

  • @johnnyguitarca Yeah, I hate not being able to find clips of gear! The amp (I think it was a DeVille) helped a lot with the tone here, but the Alumitone sounds good, too... it's a really honest pickup, so you'll hear a lot more of your "touch" (or whatever you want to call it). More high frequencies but also more clarity than your average humbucker. Also, the one I'm using isn't officially a "Deathbucker" -- I bought a tappable gold one on eBay, but I'm sure it's basically the same.

  • You are a very tasteful and unique guitarist. I LOVE your notes choices...it's great to hear something unique instead of all the blues cliche licks. I do have one big suggestion though: You REALLY need to work on your vibrato. It's not good at all. Listen to the greats and practice getting your vibrato together. If you do that, you're gonna be a monster player. Best of luck to you!

  • @johnnyguitarca Hey! Thanks for your many kind words... they're a real self-esteem booster. My sincerest gratitude. As for my vibrato, it was kind of a conscious decision. I have much greater rock influence there, and the exaggerated (and sometimes, frankly demented) vibratos of players like Brian May and especially Angus Young appeal to my ear for whatever reason. But I'm always trying to improve, so I appreciate the constructive criticism.

  • That's lame they were too square to recognize your genius, I'd like to see the SRV/Clapton riff monkeys that placed ahead of you

  • @NOLScgp Haha, thanks, brogan. I have the rest of the contestants recorded on a file somewhere.
