I think that is quite a European way to approach acting. Anthony Hopkins, one of my absolute favorite actors, who is on occassion rivaled by Viggo :), used to cite that as his technique; total immersion, knowing your character and the material backwards and forwards.

I really admire the way he studies things before actually acting his roles. It makes his characters so believable. Wish there were much more actors like him.
