During the last week of June 2009, I gave myself a seven-day crash course in bass trumpet in order to take advantage of a doubling opportunity that came my way on short notice. It was a nerve-wracking week: trying to learn a new instrument with a mouthpiece much smaller than the Schilke 61 I'm accustomed to on trombone, and trying to play in tune despite the fact that the tuning slides weren't working on my loaner horn Life would have been a lot easier had the "kick out" slide been functional.
Regardless, I did the best I could under the circumstances, and I'm glad I took advantage of the opportunity. Seven days certainly wasn't enough time to master the instrument (especially in light of the two aforementioned obstacles), but I still wanted to record something on the exotic horn before returning it.
So after playing the final fanfare of the Janacek Sinfonietta, I stuck around in the hall with my friend and videographer, Krishna Bhamidipati, and recorded a very brief medley from Howard Shore's "Lord of the Rings" soundtrack. I look forward to getting a bigger custom mouthpiece, buying a FULLY functional bass trumpet, improving my technique and playing lots more bass trumpet in the future!!!
