@whereschris probly cooling fans and the hdd's i just got me an intl server and it had dual p31ghx socket pga370 cpus in it with 1gb ram and 2 8gb scsi hadds in it along with a 40gb ide/pata hadd and a cdr/w.dvd drive its just as loud as this server
-
What does it have in that's making it so loud?
There is no way those fans are creating the noise.

You know there's a little flap over the power button that flips off to the side lol, rather than opening the whole front.
-
Yeahhh, sounds like a vacuum cleaner!!! ^^

it's a pentium III. POST talked about a 500MHz CPU with 512k of l2 cache. that's a katmai core pentium III.
BTW, you shouldn't hot-plug ps2 devices

Its weard how we managed to live back in thouse days with all that noice. If Id sit with that cpu. Id kill it realy fast!!

@gr33nh4z3 It's a Compaq Proliant 3000, I have two of the old things.. They weigh about 100lbs each.. But, even though they are old, they make good application servers or file servers..

That computer is old! I have a desktop that has a Cyrix MII 300Mhz processor, but it runs the IPCOP Linux router distro. I guess you could use that old machine to do the same (If you didn't mind having a loud 800W router). Also, you could participate in FoldingAtHome, however it may miss deadlines :(.
what kind of server is this.
as in model n such.

I don't know much about it. It's Compaq Proliant with a single P2 3xxMHz processor iirc. It has 1xxM of memory and few G's of HDD space. Sounds like a normal PC, but the chassis is very robust and the PSU is 800W hot-swappable. Additionally there are eight HDD slots and lots of different card sockets.
