    Well, Tom Bombadil was only invented in the 1955 novelization of the original 1944 movie to beef it up a little.

    Tom first appeared in The Oxford Magazine about 1933.

    In response to a letter from one of his readers, Tolkien described Tom's role in The Lord of the Rings: "Tom Bombadil ... represents something that I feel important, though I would not be prepared to analyse the feeling precisely. I would not, however, have left him in, if he did not have some kind of function."

    i enjoyed this way better than Peter Jackson's. This went straight to the point. I didn't have to watch midgets walking towards a volcano for 9 hours.
