FRANCIS IL MULO PARLANTE

Francis was a mystery guest on What's My Line in the summer of 1952. I've never seen the clip. Those who have say it was nothing special.
Stories were remarkably the same. Francis speaks only to Peter Sterling (or Mickey Rooney's David Prescott), who at some point tries to get Francis to speak to a non-believer. Francis always refuses at first. Just being stubborn. But in the end, to save O'Connor or Rooney, he speaks to the world. And in the next Francis film, that fact is fogotten.

I watched Mickey Rooney in "Francis and the Haunted House" last night. He replaced O'Connor in the last film in the series. Rooney was criticized as being too "over the top" and therefore a poor fit for the easy-going Francis films. I preferred O'Connor but thought Rooney was good too. The ridiculously trite haunted house story, though, sank the whole thing. The voice of Francis, done by Paul Frees instead of previous voice Chill Wills, was a bit off but passable.

I liked this series. The stories mimicked each other but were amusing.
I've seen 5 out of 7 Francis films. Donald O'Connor was fine, even minus his superb singing and dancing. He found out Francis could speak in film # 1 and knew about that from the start in his remaining 5 films. Mickey Rooney took over in the last film, and interestingly the writers reverted back to his character's NOT knowing Francis could speak at the very start. Rooney played a differently named character than O'Connor.
I love this show.

I wish Encore would use some good comedy like this, Martin and Lewis, Abbott and Costello, etc. I get tired of murder, explosions, sex, and other dirt. Let enjoy and good laugh sometime. Thanks
