*** VIEW IT IN 1080p HIGH DEFINITION! :) ***

"Thermals" is my first feature video in quite a long time! It shows the thrill, excitement and pleasure of Gliding, and the enjoyment I get out of it. A Thermal is a column of rising hot air, and this helps Glider pilots achieve lift for their aircraft to climb up in the air.

This is also the first video I've made using two High Definition cameras, being a GoProHD minicam and a Panasonic DMC-FT2, showing small, basic, compact equipment is enough to produce decent content. Some details.....

Flying Info:
*The glider is an ASK-21 Training Glider, VH-NKC and is with the Southern Cross Gliding Club, located at Camden Airport, on the outskirts of Sydney, Australia
*This was a training flight, as evident in the video, with my great instructor seated behind me
*The Glider is towed up by a PA-25 Pawnee Tug Aircraft, registered VH-CPU. We're towed up to 3200ft ASL after taking off from Camden, and I release the tow rope between the glider and the tug.
*Our flight was for about 35minutes, and we did manage to find a few small thermals around the place.

Video Info:
*Video was filmed with two cameras, with the cockpit angles filmed with a GoPro HD (Motorsport), whereas the ground shots are with a Panasonic DMC-FT2 camera, and it's HD video capability
*The GoPro HD was mounted in the cockpit, on top of the dashboard with the adhesive base, whereas the 'front view' angle was with the Motorsport Suction Cup mount. Both locations were free of obstruction or impact.
*The GoPro HD's recording resolution was on 'r5', which is the Full HD Highest Resolution setting on the camera (1080p, 25fps PAL, 1920x1080). The FT2's resolution was also the highest one, 4320x2432 (10.5M)
*The video was edited in Final Cut Pro 7, and exported as an .MP4 file.
*The soundtrack is "Music Sounds Better With You", by Stardust (1998).

Hi Buzz-Kill prop-wash is directly behind the tug the air above level tow or below low tow is smooth you can also box the slip stream fly a square box around the slip stream. In Austalia we fly low tow after an accident in Tasmania where a tug a glider pilot died after kiting off high tow.Try it low tow next time you go gliding.

  • Butiful ask 21, thats what i fly

  • @maikhaly thanks a lot for providing detailed information about the type of GoPro equipment you used!

I'm thinking about doing the same thing some time soon!
