A massive truck bomb has completely destroyed the Marriott Hotel in Pakistan's capital, killing at least 40 people and injuring more than 250 others.
Officials fear dozens more may also have been killed. The hotel was badly damaged and caught fire after the blast. Witnesses say the fire broke out in at least two places in the building, spreading to other parts of the 290-room hotel located in the center of Islamabad. Dozens of cars outside the hotel were destroyed, and windows were shattered in buildings hundreds of meters away.
Police say a large truck laden with explosives rammed the high metal gate of the hotel at about 8 pm local time on Saturday. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. But the government and army have been grappling with a resurgence of Islamic extremist militancy by the Taliban in Pakistan. The country's new President, Asif Ali Zardari, addressed the nation in a brief statement hours after the deadly attack. He said those responsible would be dealt with harshly.
Asif Ali Zardari said "This is a bad omen in our country, it is a cancer, which we will finish, we will not be scared of these cowards. We will not bow to these cowardly acts, Pakistan is a brave and unwavering nation. We look at our lives as an extension of God's will, we are not scared of death, death is undeniable, but we will remove this cancer from Pakistan."

This administration believes that what happens in Afghanistan and Pakistan is of vital interest to our national security, and … that India is a country that we must keep in closest consultation with,” Holbrooke said. Holbrooke added that Burns, the under secretary of state for political affairs, is carrying a private presidential letter “that I would have carried if I had the time to go to Delhi on this trip but I couldn’t do it.” Obama letter handed to India amid consultations on Pak.

Indian Consulates in Afghansitan training terrorists and sending them to Pakistan to blow up pipelines in Baluchistan
Senior US diplomat William Burns gave Indian officials a terse and cryptic directive on Thursday. ”Shut down Indian Consulates in Afghanistan, reduce presence in Kabul and stop sending mercenaries across the Durand Line.” This message was supplemented with a letter from President Barack Obama to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The message in the letter was the same.
