A successful hit with FEAR lowers enemy morale by 40. Chaos's starting morale is 255, plus FEAR only has a 1 in 256 chance of hitting. Thanks to the people on the Gamefaqs forums, I found out the equation used every round to determine if an enemy will run:

If Morale - 2*(lead warrior's level) + (Random Number from 0 to 50) is less than 80 then the enemy runs.

So, the battle starts at (155+X) LT 80- never true.
After the first FEAR- (115+X) LT 80- Never true
After the second (what happened here)- (75+X) LT 80- True only if X= 0 to 4
Following this, odds of this working and getting TWO FEARs to hit is set to approximately 1 in 3,014,656.

If someone is lucky enough to get 3 FEARs in on Chaos, the equation looks like: (35+X) LT 80, but the odds of the almost sure thing are more along the lines of approximately 1 in 10,063,296. The 100% true is after getting a 4th FEAR to stick, which has odds of approximately 1 in 4,294,967,296- you have better chances hitting the jackpot in a lottery.

Due to the odds stacked against me, this here took 5 days to accomplish using a savestate right before the final battle. Day one, I ran through standard, casting defensive spells first then spamming FEAR. Days 2 and 3 I gave up on defense whatsoever and just cast FEAR, going through each battle. Days 4 and 5 I started re-loading my savestate every time I didn't get at least one FEAR to stick in the first round, but continued the battle if it did. I've gotten the second FEAR to stick only 2 times out of I don't know how many attempts, the last being the only one of those two where Chaos ran.

(Yes I know I misspelled Volcano, I was dead tired after work)

  • If the video description is true, then you fucking deserve the biggest badass trophy in the videogames history!

  • @cptQc statistical math pretty much says it's true- though I don't know if the always failed save is 0 or 255, it's still a 1 in 256 each time a non-damage spell is used to determine success. The chance of an enemy fleeing is checked at the start of every round. So the odds of succeeding without savestating the game to hell are close to the infinitesimal range at bare minimum. And, no, trying a straight run at Chaos like I did isn't sane, just a test of stubbornness LOL

  • how the hell did you get to Chaos w\ 4 white mages...must've been a lot of dyin'!

  • @MrWildRapier More power-leveling against undead and running away until I got spell items than anything. After you get the canoe and airship, things get a little easier. Got to Chaos solo with all 12 classes, and WM/W was fairly easy, just extremely time consuming. Check out some of my other vids if ya want a peek at those- Thief was by far the worst to solo, though the hardest were my lowest level possible runs (getting to Chaos with a LV 9 party)
  • Haha, nice. Reminds me of Kefka instantly perishing upon Setzer's "joker doom."

  • @Kameelyun LOL yeah classic "WTF?

was that actually a last boss?" moments

are always good fun. Was thinking of

trying this one with 4 BWs for a medley of

insta-kills from them, but Chaos running

away is still tops for this game.

  • i have worked 2000 years going back in time, and now i kill you by... running away

  • @florifan12 1 Fear = rare

    2 Fear = almost impossible

    3 Fear = impossible

4 Fear = give up already, man!

  • ...

    I didn't understand the description... =S... X3

  • @f4rtg34ji Something I didn't find out until recently (went off a faulty faq for the odds when I did this) Thanks for reminding me to update the description

  • "Four White Mages? It'll never work."

    Guess again, Black Mage.

  • Wow crazy lucky looking at the odds in the description nice!!!!!!

  • @kamikaze9699 Well, then you deserve the biggest badass trophy of stubborness in the videogames history! Hahaha

This test has confirmed the perspective I have about the non-damaging spells : They're fucking useless...

Seriously, the fact that you spent 5 days doing the same thing is, imo, pretty insane! With a great revealing fact : This video proves that after 2000 years of supremacy, Chaos is only a coward pussy! Well done!

  • There's a 1 in 256 chance Chaos can be TERMINATED using the BANE sword.

So much for the EPIC last boss
