This A Link to the Past manga, released in 1993, is a compiled anthology of 12 volumes originally printed in 12 issues of the US magazine Nintendo Power in 1992. The creator of the manga/anime Cyborg 009, Shotaro Ishinomori, penned the story and illustrations. As a homage, Roam, a character exclusive to this A Link to the Past manga, looks exactly like the character Jet from Cyborg 009. Dan Owsen, a longtime translator for Nintendo of America, is credited as the copywriter.

Though the manga is based on A Link to the Past, the story deviates here and there to provide a unique adventure for even those familiar with the video game. The story is also shortened considerably, many locales and dungeons are removed entirely. Link only finds two crystalized maidens in the Dark World, for instance.

This book makes for a nice collectible for Zelda fans. It's a fun story with simple and colorful, expressive art. While it's not too common, it's also not all that expensive on eBay, and tends to go for as little as $15 or maybe as high as $35.

  • I Got one for 3 Dollars at an Antique mall, its in Awesome shape, and I cant Believe I found one-- oh and BTW the Manga is from 1993 not 1992- reason is because I checked the Copyrights and stuff of the book and it Said 1993.....but you were close!

(mind approving my video for Proof?)

  • @STOPNSWOPguy The manga is from 1992. That is when it ran in Nintendo Power. This compiled book came out in 1993, a year later.

  • We actually had this manga in finnish way before manga was cool. It was included in the finnish magazine "Nintendo Lehti", along with some Mario manga comics. Still have those mags. :)

  • @finngamer That's really cool! Nintendo Power used to print all kinds of serialized manga before it was cool here too. We had the Mario ones as well. :)

  • @tvandlust Cool, too bad they gave over Nintendo Power to some other publishing company.

  • @tvandlust

    ....oh heh heh

  • That's pretty cool! I have a compilation book kind of like this, but for the Super Mario Adventures comic that was also in Nintendo Power I think around or near the same time as this. I read it a lot as a kid, and it's a little torn up now, but I'm happy to have it :p

  • I was always wondering why that guy looks like Jet. Now I know.
