I was a Star Trek fan when I was a kid, but that was before Star Wars. Star Wars created such a fantastic mythology that was perfect for the age. It is odd to think that it came out less than 10 years after the assassinations of Dr. King and Bobby Kennedy. Their murders, along with those of Medgar Evers and JFK before them, did a great deal of damage to the world's sense of fairness, goodness, and hope. Star Wars renewed that in a way that no other myth of the times could.

@sharonafox Yes, I think real-world issues are explored in both as well; the Empire obviously parallels the Third Reich, for example. As for setting said issues in the future, technically Star Wars already happened a long time ago ;)
