In dialog, quotation marks should contain what a speaker said verbatim. Use punctuation as it would normally be used around quotation marks when writing in dialog with help from a certified tutor in this free video on punctuation in the English language.

  • It might escape the attention of someone watching this video that periods/question marks/exclamation marks come before the closing quotation mark when writing dialog, not after.
