This was PRE digital TVs . . . one was set so that the tv picture didn't roll up and/or down the screen and the other was to stop the picture turning into lots of diagonal lines which seemed to flash up or down the screen.

This was on the old Cathode Ray Tube TVs.

Interesting that here Roger sings about a 'horizontal hold', while in the song 'Drowse' he mentions a 'vertical hold'. Wonder what they both mean?
