Premiere December 4th at ZKM, Karlsruhe
STRAHLEN (RAYS) for a percussionist and 10-track tape
(ca 35 minutes).

Introduction by Prof. Ludger Brümmer
Head of Institute for Music and Acoustics:

Short before I moved 2003 to Karlsruhe as head of the Institute fir Music and Acoustics at the Center for Art and Media (ZKM) Karlheinz Stockhausen mentioned for the first time the work STRAHLEN. He was looking for the opportunity to produce the work and had the idea that the ZKM could be a good place to do that. We began to produce the work at the Institute for Music and Acoustics together with Laszlo Hudacsek. Parts of the work were realized and several sound synthesis procedures were tested and evaluated. The idea of a vibraphone producing thousands of endless tones including glissandi and crescendi required a different thinking and a well-organized infrastructure. Many of Stockhausen's sound ideas required a specific technology. Some had to be invented and some ideas were formulated in the course of the discussion. But finally the sounding result was of importance. The implementing shifted however in favor of a new project. Peter Weibels decided to produce Stockhausen's new work LICHT-BILDER at the festivals in Donaueschingen (2004). Thus the IMA was blocked with the production fort the rest of the year.

After the premiere of LICHT-BILDER some attempts were made to continue with STRAHLEN but no initiative lead to the decision to continue the production. After the death of Stockhausen it became apparent that the Institute for Music and Acoustics having the work carried out so far had surely accumulated quite a sufficient know-how and solutions for the creation of the production. The idea to continue with STRAHLEN and premiere the work was possible through the help of Kathinka Pasveer. As well the decision of the Kunststiftung NRW supporting the commission generously gave the final impulse to continue the production. For this I would like to thank the general secretary of the art foundation North-Rhine/Westphalia Regina Wyrwoll and the head of the music projects Professor Dr. Hans Joachim Wagner cordially.

Since 2003 Laszlo Hudacsek accompanied the production, as percussionist and he will premiere the work. Also Götz Dipper, with which I had looked in infinite discussions for adequate technical solutions, participated the production from the beginning. Finally we succeeded to master a tremendous logistic planning and accomplished the work in the shortest possible time. Following Dippers calculations a single person would have spent approx. 4.5 years, in order to manufacture the 10 voices!
STRAHLEN will be finally premiered exactly two years after Stockhausen died on the 5th of December. For all of us this is a special moment, which will be carrying the music of Stockhausen into the future.
