Brian J. McCormick, Jr. is a managing partner of the firm. Before joining Sheller, P.C., Mr. McCormick was a partner in the Philadelphia office of a large, international law firm.
In early 2007, Mr. McCormick received an offer to work for Stephen Sheller, a Philadelphia lawyer with a wide reputation for his courtroom skills and enormous success in a variety of drug product and complex catastrophic personal injury cases.
Before joining the Sheller Law Firm, Mr. McCormick focused his practice on a variety of complex commercial litigation matters, including corporate investigations, shareholder and partnership disputes, securities litigation, healthcare matters and Medicare fraud.
Mr. McCormick has also assisted the U.S. Government with the successful prosecution of several qui tam actions in his career. As a young lawyer entering the profession, Mr. McCormick was charged with the responsibility for managing and litigating large multimillion dollar cases, recognizing his legal acumen and attention to fine detail, unusual for attorneys in the early stages of their career. This experience has proved invaluable, representing whistleblowers in three matters and bringing about the successful recovery in the biggest cases in U.S. history of over $4.2 billion in only 15 months during 2009-2010.
Adding to whistleblower qui tam work, Mr. McCormick also practices pharmaceutical injury, consumer protection, products liability and mass tort litigation. He also continues to represent many of his former business clients in complex commercial litigation matters. Mr. McCormick has litigated, and continues to litigate, cases on behalf of individuals, small companies and large corporations. He has extensive experience with advanced trial technologies that are highly effective with today's jurors.
Mr. McCormick has practiced before trial and appellate judges in both state and federal courts, and has represented clients in alternative dispute resolution forums such as the American Arbitration Association. He has also represented clients in numerous mediations, and recognizes the cost-effectiveness of certain ADR procedures.
Mr. McCormick was selected as a "Pennsylvania Rising Star SuperLawyer" by the national SuperLawyer organization for five years, a designation held by only 2.5 percent of lawyers statewide. In 2006 Mr. McCormick was one of 42 attorneys in Pennsylvania distinguished as a "Lawyer on the Fast Track" by nation's oldest legal newspaper, The Legal Intelligencer. The Lawyer on the Fast Track award recognizes Pennsylvania attorneys younger than 40 who have demonstrated outstanding promise in the legal profession and have made a significant commitment to the community as a whole. In 2009, Mr. McCormick was selected as a Pennsylvania "SuperLawyer," the first year he was eligible and recognized again in 2010. He speaks on matters relating to pharmaceutical whistleblowers, defective drugs and medical devices and class actions. His most recent talk was at the American Association for Justice's annual meeting in Hawaii.
A native of Philadelphia, Mr. McCormick is active in the community and has performed substantial pro bono work on behalf of impoverished clients in Philadelphia. His civic service includes being selected by Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter to serve on a task force to study and make recommendations for full disclosure and transparency in the city's ethics and campaign finance. The final report was issued in late 2009 and recognized with appreciation by Mayor Nutter and a published editorial in the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper.
Mr. McCormick is also member of the Board of Directors of the Philadelphia nonprofit "Committee of Seventy." The organization works toward raising public awareness through advocacy for clean and effective government, fair elections, and an honest political culture.
Mr. McCormick is admitted to practice before numerous courts around the country, including the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, the United States Court of Federal Claims and all state and federal courts in New Jersey.
Before attending law school, Mr. McCormick served as an analyst with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in its Philadelphia office, working on government corruption, organized crime and surveillance. He was responsible for researching, collecting, and distilling information and disseminating to agents nationwide. Mr. McCormick has also worked as a newspaper reporter in the Philadelphia area.
Mr. McCormick lives in suburban Philadelphia with his wife and three children and enjoys coaching Little League baseball.
