Shaping the Retrieve Part One (cat)

This is intended as an example of what shaping* can look like in practice. A more thorough retrieve tutorial with discussion of the individual training steps is being planned.

*Shaping by successive approximation: Rewarding baby steps in the right direction. The animal very gradually has to do more to get the trainer to click and treat. Good timing and criteria setting is essential.

Your cat is obviously not the piece of mange that mine is. She is more interested in detecting the pocket holding the treats and just bypassing any work and claiming the treats 'as of right'. Also, she shows little interest in the clicker training even when the treat on offer is one that she will run from anywhere in the house for on the mere rustle of the foil wrapping.
