Because of where the fortress was situated, enemy could not get in. Other fortresses fell because enemy tunnelled under the wals and brought them down easily. The Hospitaller knights finally evacuated the fortress as it was pointless to stay while all the other fortresses were overrun.

Krak des Chevaliers was the headquarters of the Knights Hospitaller during the Crusades. It was expanded between 1150 and 1250 and eventually housed a garrison of 2,000.

How long did it take to build? Who exactly built it? Who designed, and over-saw the construction, and who did the actual work of lifting and placing the stones? Were they slaves, or paid workers? Even if they were slaves they would have to be fed. How many men, for how long?
