But Sydney has Cityrail which is doing a huge revamp of its services is that not so? If we move to Sydney, we'd be looking at Parramatta which has good transport links. In Melbourne - Toorak and surrounding areas so that we're in a "tram-burb". =)

Compared to New Zealand, the transport in Australia is top notch. Sydney has fantastic transport and from my Mothers perspective, so did Melbourne to the inner suburbs. When I was in Brisbane as well I was impressed with the level of transport. But then, anything is better than Auckland.

I'm a Brisbane / Gold Coast courier..... Melb has the arts culture.... Sydney has the commercial sector... And Brisbane / Gold Coast focus is tourism.... one thing in common.... state and federal governments ALL neglect public transport... population 22million and our roads and rail are SHIT!!!!

I'v now lived 24 years in Sydney and 12 months in Melbourne and can say as a general rule I have found transport in Melbourne to be somewhat better than Sydney. Although it has a very extensive bus route network, the roads in sydney let the bus system down due to the bad layout and small roads with few lanes. Overall I find travelling in and around Melbourne to be more comfortable than Sydney which often involves cramped vehicles (cramped from design not from load factors)

Is public transport really that bad in Melbourne? My family wish to move to Australia (we live in New Zealand but we're English) and we're currently tossing up between Sydney and Melbourne. I know that Melbourne has a bit of a shocking bus service in comparison to Sydney, but the lifestyle of Melbourne appeals more (the arts etc).
What this video shows is specific problems on New Year's Eve 2003/04, and how the government was pressured to fix them for the following year. It does not reflect on the general state of public transport in Melbourne, which can be quite good (or bad) depending on which suburb you live in.
