Low and behold, context is required to fully understand a story.

  • My question is, why was a govt lawyer involved in the first place? If there was an issue, then a judge should have told them. Divorce is a civil matter. How did the Crown get its nose in this?

I'd also be curious to find out what would happen if Joe were to marry a man in Canada, could he still marry a woman in Texas? And what would happen if he went somewhere gay marriage was legal? Could he be charged with bigamy even though both marriages were legal?

  • @chasef89 The lawsuit was placed against the government of Canada, so, naturally, the crown got involved in its own defense.

  • Thanks. I wondered what the real story behind this was.

  • Thanks for the explanation and, as always, so well spoken. Perhaps I could even learn to like hockey.

  • Scott, thank you so much for posting this. I understood the issue from the start, and was very upset on how Canada was being perceived due to peoples misunderstandings. You are a brilliant speaker and get the point across on issues that some can not wrap around their heads. I truly respect your thoughts and opinions. Keep them coming!

  • You have to pay for a divorce here, why can't you pay for it there?

  • @Erikur17 You don't need to be residents to get married in Canada, just like Vegas. Only to get divorced apparently. Congress can define when Full Faith applies, and since they passed the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996, states and the federal govt arent obligated to recognize gay unions. Before that, any marriage (even ones that were illegal in some jurisdictions like interacial) were automatically acknowledged. Marriage is a state issue, but Congress has a say in how its recognized.

  • cant they just go to one of the states that reconizes ssm and get divorced?

  • Thanks for making this vid. You cleared up a lot of confusion I had surrounding this.

  • When I first heard the news story (Canada abolishing gay marriages for non-Canadians), I did not believe the story I heard was correct, but did not have the time to research the facts. This reminds me of the case in Africa where a man was found beheaded. The blogs went wild that it was a gay rights activist. I waited to discuss the murder. I am glad I waited, because gay rights advocates in that country said the man was not a gay rights activist.

  • You have a wonderful way of explaining things in detail while keeping it interesting.

  • Always a joy to hear from you, Scott. Fine video as always.
