From the recently restored film directed by King Vidor and starring John Gilbert and Eleanor Boardman. This dreamy sequence, photographed by the legendary William Daniels, represents the art of silent cinema at its very best.

Was pleased that this film had been recently restored. Think only scene available for years was one seen by audience in SHOW PEOPLE - or was it THE CROWD? Look forward to seeing this eventually. On holiday in Vigo saw a dvd of it but not clear what region it was so reluctantly put it back. Thank you for a tantalising glimpse. Robert Smith

They just showed this recovered classic on TCM last night and once again I missed the beginning! I agree that Eleanor Boardman was a fine actress and turned in an accomplished restrained performance, more than holding her own in scenes with the great John Gilbert. What a lovely screen personality, and she was married to director King Vidor when Bardelys was made! His direction has a light touch, and Vidor uses a mobile camera in this movie as well as any German silent director. Beautiful exampl

Eleanor was beautiful even as an old lady you can see her old in Hollywood: A Celebration of the American Silent Film - 12 Star Treatment

I just read this book, I think for the first time though I've had the book for decades, and my 1926 copy is illustrated with stills from the movie. I thought they looked silly & stagey - and I *like* silent films! - but wow, it works better in motion!

One of my favorite lines in the movie is when her tells her "Your hair is like a jealous cloud, veiling the beautiful moon" ahhhh, great lines, great cinematography!

    Dear Eleanor Boardman,

Happy Belated Birthday!!!!!!!!!! You were one of my favorite actresses from the silent era. I wish you had continued a long career in sound since you successfully transitioned into talking pictures. You had a beautiful voice. I stay spellbound when you talk in the documentary Hollywood: The Pioneers (1980).

    I love you Eleanor!!!!!!!!
