As an introduction to my knife steels video, I wanted to make sure that everyone that watches it will be on the same foot and understand what the various elements in steel are there for.

So here it is, the basic introduction to knife steel elements.

A full video comparing various knife steels shortly to come, within the next couple of days. I am spending a lot of time on it as I want it to look nice and all, this is just the introduction to it.

Questions and Comments desired and welcomed.

  • What is a High Speed Steel? You used the term when describing Tungsten (W).

  • High speed steel is steel that keeps its properties at high speed and temps, like the steel seen in saw blades and drill bits. A lot of the 'M' type tool steels are high speed steels.

  • so true, it depends on what you use it for and under which conditions. we all know the video in which nutnfancy managed to break a really good knive just because it was to frikken cold! wouldnt have happened in the summertime.

thx for your efforts to explain the basics 5*s!

  • no problem, more to come.

It is very true, each type of good steel has its advantages and disadvantages.

Some are all around a good balanced blade steel, but I guess that is its disadvantage, it is spectacular at nothing...

    Anyway, more to come soon.

  • I may eventually, this steel project is taking longer than expected, so it would be a while....

I mean, the first segment of the steels is on 10 different non stainless ones, and it will prolly take another 2-3 days or so to get finished and uploaded.

  • Yeah and the coatingmaterials? are you going to do a vid on that?

  • thanks man

  • Sweet!

Can't wait for the next parts of the series.

  • I cant wait to see it too! lol, still working on it, it is taking a long time, and I am just doing the tool and carbon one now.
