Indian extremists want to limit women's freedom - 14 Feb 09

A Hindu extremist group in India has threatened to protest on Valentine's Day because they say it is immoral.

The Shri Ram Sena group has previously launched violent attacks against women to protest against "eroding culture and tradition".

But as Al Jazeera's Matt McClure reports, some women are fighting back attempts to limit their freedom.

Why is it "America"? Why isn't it Britain, France, Spain, Sweden, Germany, Norway or any other western country?

Its stupid how people say only women are oppressed in India. Do you know that 1 married Indian man commits suicide in India every 9 minutes? Everytime thugs break into a house, they normally rape the women but KILL the men.

And btw, in that nightclub controversy, women aren't bashed its the men who are later taken to hospitals.

It's not just india. I live in canada, I'm indian. Here girls are forbidden by parents to have as much freedom as the boys in the family. The boys can drink, go out as they please, do whatever. If a girl does the same the parents freak out. Thank god my parents were born in canada and beleive in equal rights.

women in any country have the right to go where they want, do what they choose, marry who they choose, to be educated and to have a career; now if this offends men with no balls so be it; it is pitiful that backward countries blame women for every ill that occurs in society-esp. when it is men who beat, rape and murder innocent women=a real man would never do such a thing

@sipraomer i am also against pub culture but it doesnt meant violence especially against women.the thought of rss may be right but the way they react is wrong.they forget that india is a democracy .and is it good culture to beat women either man by these people if she has done some bad work.they have no right to do this at all.
