I don't know; I haven't seen any of DMC3. The board game itself, however, isn't random: The number on the top of the die when Nero slashes it (or shoots it) will be the number of spaces he has to move. And seeing how the die moves, it can be deliberately manipulated.
The presence of the board game inside of the Savior, however, IS pretty random.
Didn't DMC3 handle its "boss parade" better? You only had to complete a minimum of 3 bosses, in any order, without a stupid random boardgame to hold you back.
I'd say it's a symptom of running out of disk space or development time than ideas. Otherwise, the sequels for Devil May Cry and The Legend of Zelda wouldn't be as strong as they are now.
Even then, it's not as bad as the palette swaps running rampant in the 8-bit and 16-bit days. (They still exist today, but not quite as often.)
backtracking bosses morelike. Capcom have got an annoying habit of making you fight old bosses again, same thing happened with Viewtiful Joe. Nintendo are just as bad, remember zelda windwaker? Thats my only complaint for this game.
I remember there being a stage in the third game where you have to fight the bosses from the previous levels.

I for one preferred Dante's solution to the board game: cut it in two and get on with smashing enemies!

From what I saw looking closely at these videos, yes.

So, you can control the number you get just by hitting the dice when the number you want is on top?

true true. kinda annoys me when game developers do this in current games, just shows they've run out of ideas really.
