I was given the task of shooting and editing the Behind the Scenes for Toyota's infamous "Wrecking Hammer" spot as part of my work with the advertising agency of Saatchi & Saatchi LA.

I was sent out on location to Barstow, CA for 9 days to work on set while the crew got the necessary shots for both "Wrecking Hammer" and "Crosswinds". I shot on the Panasonic HVX-200 P2 video camera and the Canon Rebel XTi still camera, and I edited entirely in Final Cut Pro.

The final video and numerous stills have been integrated into the Toyota Tundra website with further use planned for special events and print publications.

I'm very proud of the work I put in to finish this project, and I hope that work shows. Check out "Crosswinds", too.

  • wow very impressive! I really wish I had your job! Btw is the Panasonic P2 camera really worth it? I just find the P2 storage to be ridiculously expensive...

  • P2 is definitely worth it, but it's not ideal for all situations. For doing short takes on a controlled set like environment you can get away with shooting all day on even 4GB cards (I shot a Star Wars parody shot on 2 4GB cards), but for longer shots, longer days, no access to a computer or time to copy off the footage and you really need the larger cards or maybe even just stick with tape.

  • For this piece I shot on 2 16GB and 2 4GB cards, copying off my footage to a 500GB FireWire drive through a Titanium G4. As long as I had about 15 minutes of down time I could run off to the notebook and and swap cards. We're trying to get a HVX170 and 2 32GB cards this year. With those and the other cards I can shoot almost all day without needing to off load the video.

  • But the best for of the P2 work flow is the "Log and Transfer" function in Final Cut. Being able to ingest the video so quickly has saved me HOURS of logging time per project. Sony has a similar product based on the Memory Stick and I just bought a HDD based camcorder for personal use and all use the same work flow. I am done with tape.
