@LifeforArt Yes i know, i never said that pike would be their primary weapon.. I just commented becouse I was bored, so i wrote too cuicly and made some spelling mistakes, thats why you misunderstood

@TheRomanRuler You are wrong. Check the official Vatican website. And i recomend Wiki and others. The Swiss Guard have the same weapons as the swiss army.

Their pike is old fashioned, but i don`t think its obsolete. After all, they just ceremonial guard

They do, at least the basic military training of Switzerland which is an absolute obligation to apply for being a swiss guard. I imagine that they received also a special training for being body guard when they get in.

you know, those bodyguards your talking about, they are swiss guards as well. It just that they do not wear the colourful uniform, only black suits.
and they still have today a very high reputation for being disciplined, loyal and hard working.

@rpgta thanks! the papal guard looks like they are for the show factor, also when the pope was attacked from the crowd, the guard was not paying attention, some body guards handled the situation after. but in the period of 1300-1500 they were the best probably, and in 2011? you have some training clips? like to see. it would be a blessing to serve in such a small army!
