Excess fluoride in groundwater above 1.5 ppm is harmful to the health of people who consume it. In over 5500 habitations in Karnataka this is a concern. While many options for removing is available rooftop rainwater harvesting seems to be a good option. The Government of Karnataka supports such a programme in 64 villages in the state where the NGO BIRD-K implements it with the help of village community and Self Help Groups. This family is available to sit and play because they have the confidence that they consume fluoride free water.
Arghyam www.arghyam.org is helping BIRD-K document and disseminate this information so that the 66 million people in India can learn from this experience. This village is in Sira taluk Tumkur district.
