Because he changed Al's past..He told Al's first wife he wasn't dead just P.O.W. Pretty much saying Al and his first wife ended being together which changed history drastically. Al never would have met Sam. Project Quantum Leap never would have happend then, because Al was a big part in helping Sam out with the funding and all that. Sam pretty much screwed his whole life up just to save Al's..I thought it was a very good way to end the show..

@eisenkreuzmusik I know it didnt make sense. God or whatever told him he has the ability to leap home anytime he wants, and sam even said a few times how he wanted to go home, but the ending text said he never returned home what a let down!
