Check out Zoo Meds new Excavator™ Clay Burrowing Substrate!

Excavator® Clay Substrate (XR-05) allows you to build a beautiful Naturalistic desert terrarium. Excavator® enables you to build burrows and tunnels similar to what is found in nature. These elements of a desert terrarium are very important and Excavator® makes it fun and easy to re-create! Excavator can be used in a small corner of the terrarium, or throughout the entire terrarium and even as a background. This substrate encourages natural digging behaviors and can act as a form of enrichment for many desert species.

  • @zoomedlabs what desert reptiles could live in this terrarium ?

  • @jonesunooob Excavator is great for a variety of desert animals. Leopard Geckos, Bearded Dragons, Uromastyx, Curly Tails, and Tarantulas are just a few that would feel comfortable with Excavator. If there is a specific type of animal you'd like to use it for, feel free to ask here, or contact our Customer Service for more information. They can be reached at:

    Take care.

  • Approximately how much would a 10lb bag cover? I've got a 60x30x30 cm tank and it's gonna cover the ground about 2 cm to a tall hidey place approx 15cm (a ramp like structure).

  • @MOstling333 It all really depends on how you plan on using it. It's always good to have more then less; you don't want to get halfway building the terrarium and realize you don't have enough Excavator. For the setup you've described, I'm being told that getting an additional 10lb bag, or just one 25lb bag, of Excavator would be good just to be sure you have enough. Hope that helps. Take care.

  • @1juanaguilar Starting them out on cage carpet and graduating them to substrate as they get bigger is always a nice precaution, but as long as they are well-nourished and taken care off, and the Excavator is used as instructed, your baby leopard geckos shouldn't have any problems. Check out our caresheet on impaction on our website for more information and helpful tips on how to avoid it. Hope that helps, take care.

  • @zoomedlabs can i use this for a baby leopard gecko or will it impact it?

  • @Amontking1 We recommend spot cleaning regularly. The more often you spot clean, the less work you have to put into maintaining Excavator. We also recommend putting a thin layer of a different substrate on top of Excavator to make it that much easier to clean. If the Terrarium gets to the point that it needs to be cleaned entirely, wetting Excavator allows it to return to a malleable form, thus allowing you to remove it completely. Hope that answers your question.

  • how do you clean the cage if it is stuck to the glass?

  • @cheekyplums We have never used this substrate in a wooden vivarium so I’m not really sure how well it would work. If you decide to try it, please let us know how it works out!
