Writer William Gay reads from his novel PROVINCES OF NIGHT at the Country Music Hall of Fame in November 2007. Gay is the author of TWILIGHT, THE LONG HOME and I HATE TO SEE THAT EVENING SUN GO DOWN: COLLECTED STORIES. This was part of the event "Picks and Pens," which featured musicians and writers whose work inspires each other. Also featured were Scott Miller, Chris Knight and Silas House.
I think WIlliam Gay is fantastic, and he is personally an inspiration to me as a non-college educated southerner trying to find a literary voice out here in the hinterlands. However, to suggest that he is as good as any living writer is to suggest that Cormac McCarthy is no longer alive.

This guy is a genius. An absolute genius. I have the good fortune of having talked with him a few times and spent a couple of hours at his home. He's as good or better than any living writer. And as someone else said way before I ever did, he's better than a bunch of dead ones, too. Take my advice and read every word this writes.
