My friend "Jill" was 45 when she became addicted to prescription drugs. Ex model, Master's Degree, a husband who made 6 figure salary. After rehab Jill had a nervous breakdown (untreated). She became addicted to meth and her husband, kids and even her mother disowned her. I helped her for awhile but her problems were greater than me.

I lost track of her about 2 years ago, but she was homeless AND addicted to meth. If you knew her full story you might feel afraid for yourself...

"In a well governed country poverty is something to be ashamed of."

I know I would be ashamed if I did not care enough to help, even if it is only through saying hello and buying someone a sandwich to eat.

wmbdm, Many VISIABLY homeless R mentally ill. Why? In the 80's Ronald Reagan dismantled state-funded mental health care without creating an alternate system, & subsequent administrations have add 2 the problem. Patients were taken from institutions in buses & dumped in major cities. He cut the budget for the Department of Housing & Urban Development from $32 billion in 1981 to $7.5 billion by 1988. That department was the main governmental support of housing for the poor. It has never recovered.

wmbdm Yes most homeless people need mental help and it seems like not many people care or this wouldn't be happening. Sad isn't it? It breaks my hurt.

BE CAREFUL. Their angst could become yours. We are ALL one step away from the streets. They didn't sign up to be homeless. They DID sign up for integrity, just as you signed up to be an ass. With any luck, life will treat you kind. Should karma work it's magic, I promise to look lovingly into your hollow lonesome eyes. Please pass the baton of the most important lesson in life, "acceptance." Peace.

NEVER think you are exempt from this plight, as nothing is permanent.

"just as you signed up to be an ass." Great retort. I honestly don't know which I find more upsetting and depressing -- the plight of the homeless or the heartlessness that so many people show in their video comments.

In case it wasn't clear, I do think that was a great retort... I should have left a blank before ruminating on the a-holes posting such cruel stuff.
