Semi-automated bench mounted pneumatic press for preparing powder samples for XRD analysis

Overview

The Essa Australia XRD Press is designed to semi automate the preparation of pressed powder samples for analysis by XRD. The pneumatic piston forms a lightly pressed sample into a two piece sample holder associated with standard XRD analysers.

Consistently prepared samples produced in a dust free environment

The XRD Press is supplied as a pneumatically actuated press unit and a separate heavy duty industrial vacuum cleaner. The press unit is designed for free standing on the customer's bench top with the vacuum cleaner placed nearby to collect excess sample after pressing.

The sample ring is loaded onto the table and the press operated to lower the platen. At this point the sample is simply spooned into the ring - an excess of sample is required in order for a correct sample to be pressed.

The press is operated again and the mound of sample is lightly pressed. The excess sample is automatically scraped off and vacuumed away. The sample holder base plate is manually snapped into place and the press again operated. The sample holder assembly, complete with sample, is rotated onto the discharge base and lowered for manual removal. The press returns to the initial state ready for the next sample.

Prior to reloading the next sample ring the surface upon which the ring is placed should be wiped with tissue paper to avoid cross contamination of the next sample.

Services required

240 volt AC single phase power supply

Clean dry compressed air at greater than 600 kPa

Vacuum system connected to outlet at rear (an industrial vacuum cleaner is supplied with the unit as standard)

Ease of adjustment

The force generated by the press can be easily adjusted via the regulator knob located at the right rear of the press unit.

The pressure gauge directly above indicates the pressure.

The force adjustment range is 2 to 8kg.
