Since our founding in 1999, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) has fought to defend the First Amendment on campus and protect students and faculty members whose freedom of expression is in jeopardy. The following video reviews five of the worst cases in our history, and provides a glimpse at the various threats to freedom on campus and the means that FIRE uses to combat them. A special thanks to Mr. Lawrence Post for making this video possible. For more information on these cases or on FIRE's work, visit thefire.org. Music by Jason Shaw at audionautix.com.

  • The scary thing about these incidents taken together --- and the current one at University of Wisconsin--Stout ---- is the ignorance on the part of university administrators of the limits of their authority and the extent of their students' and faculty's liberties established by the Bill of Rights.

That such levels of ignorance of basic American Constitutional history are apparently widespread among public university administrators [and some faculties] I find appalling.

  • I praise FIRE for its power to overcome the problems for college students.

  • So does freedom of speech of professors IN THE CLASSROOMS extend to false statements like Maurice Eisenstein's: “..If they never existed, it really would not make a whole lot of difference. You may miss the oil, but the oil is not, has nothing to do with Muslims, it’s under the ground. Outside of that, except for raping four year olds, they’re not any good. They haven’t done anything. And, even in your wildest dreams, name one thing, that’s come out of any Muslim country...”

  • No wonder the U.S. populace has grown apathetic and submissive to authority. Thank you FIRE!

  • This is a great video telling of FIRE's victories over college censorship.
