Hamid can play anything under the sun. He wails on reggae. He defines African drumming. He shreds jazz. I have even heard him smoke polka! One of the five best drummers of all time, including Chick Webb and Elvin Jones.

@papavereus true! i watched him played with david murray last year, it was amazing moment, never seen any drummer like him...awesome sense, great feel, he is the 5 stars drummer! no doubt!

This a high quality video clip of Hamid Drake, but he's even better live in a small venue in which you can hear and see him up close.He's really intense and loud for a jazz drummer, and by far the best drummer in Chicago!

Hamid has really UNIQUE sense of rhythm. for me: the best contemporary drummer, and one of the best drummers ever... If you'll have a chance to watch him live, do so - ir's unusual experience.
